Power management IC sourcing

DC-DC converters, LDOs, PMICs, chargers, gate drivers and supervisors, by complete ordering code or by specification. We check the suffix, package, reference voltage and temperature grade against your requirement before we quote, so the part that arrives is the part your board was designed for.

What we source

Six subfamilies cover almost every power line on a BOM. Each has its own parameters, its own suffix scheme and its own reasons to go short.

Step-down and step-up converters

Buck, boost, buck-boost and inverting regulators, integrated-switch and controller types, 3 V to 60 V input. Typical lines: TPS54331, TPS5430, LM2596, MP1584, LMR33630.

LDOs and references

Low-dropout regulators from 150 mA to 3 A, low-Iq LDOs for battery designs, shunt and series references. Typical lines: AMS1117, AP2112, MCP1700, TLV755, TL431.

PMICs

Multi-rail PMICs matched to a processor, with factory-set voltages and power-up sequence. Typical lines: TPS65217 for AM335x, AXP-class PMICs, PCA9450 for i.MX 8M.

Battery chargers and gauges

Single-cell linear and switching chargers, fuel gauges and protection ICs. Typical lines: MCP73831, BQ24072, BQ25895, BQ27441.

Gate and motor drivers

Low-side, half-bridge and isolated gate drivers, brushed and BLDC motor drivers. Typical lines: IR2110, UCC27211, DRV8833, DRV8301.

Supervisors, load switches and eFuses

Reset supervisors and watchdogs with fixed thresholds, load switches, eFuses and hot-swap controllers. Typical lines: MAX809, TPS3823, TPS22918, TPS2595.

What a power IC quote depends on

Send what you have. A complete ordering code is fastest; a requirement works too, and we come back with candidate codes.

The quote line states the source channel, packaging, date code, lead time and validity. Nothing is substituted without your written approval.

Representative parts and their key numbers

These are lines we see often. The numbers are the ones a replacement must match, taken from the manufacturers’ current datasheets.

Example parts, not a stock list. Confirm the current datasheet and the exact suffix before design or purchase. Need one of these? Send the part number and we confirm the orderable code and stock.

How to specify each subfamily

What makes two parts interchangeable is different in every subfamily. These are the checks our engineers run before a candidate goes on a quote.

The six tabs below cover the numbers that decide a swap, the trap we see most often in each subfamily, and what to send so we can quote without guessing.

Six problems buyers find after the order

Each of these looks fine on a quote and fails on the board. We check for them before a line is quoted.

What happened
Why
À vérifier

Output rail is wrong after a “compatible” swap

Different reference voltage; the same divider sets a different output

Vref of both parts

Regulator oscillates

1117-type LDO given a low-ESR ceramic output capacitor, or the reverse

Output-capacitor requirement in the datasheet

LDO goes into thermal shutdown

Dissipation (Vin − Vout) × Iout too high for the package

θJA on your board and maximum ambient

Fixed 5 V part arrives instead of the adjustable one

LM2596S-5.0 and LM2596S-ADJ differ only in the suffix

Output option letters on every line

Board resets or charges a cell to the wrong voltage

Threshold or regulation voltage set by a suffix letter

Supervisor threshold, charger voltage option

Industrial unit fails at −40 °C

Commercial-grade part (0 to 70 °C) quoted for an industrial line

Temperature-grade letter; AEC-Q100 grade for automotive

Worked example: one divider, two outputs

The output of an adjustable buck is set by Vout = Vref × (1 + R1 / R2).

A board built around a TPS54331 uses R1 = 31.6 kΩ and R2 = 10 kΩ. With its 0.8 V reference, that gives 3.33 V. Both TPS54331 and TPS5430 are 3 A TI step-down converters in 8-pin SOIC-class packages, so they often appear together in a search. With the TPS5430’s 1.221 V reference, the same divider gives 5.08 V on a rail that feeds 3.3 V logic.

The two parts also differ in input range, frequency, pinout and thermal pad. They are not alternatives. When we list a candidate, the quote shows every one of these numbers next to the original. Send your part number to see them for your line.

Worked example: LDO heat

An AMS1117-3.3 in SOT-223 drops 5 V to 3.3 V at 0.8 A. It dissipates (5 − 3.3) × 0.8 = 1.36 W.

With θJA around 60–90 °C/W on a typical two-layer board (it depends on copper area), the junction rises 80–120 °C above ambient. At 40 °C ambient, that reaches or passes the 125 °C limit. A buck converter, or an LDO in a package with an exposed pad, is the fix, and it changes the BOM. Upload the BOM and we quote the changed lines together.

Three requests we see, and how we handle them

Each started as a short message with a part number. What we check, and in which order, decides whether the buyer gets a usable part or a second failure.

"ICL7660s from a marketplace overheat"

Check the supply first: the ICL7660 is rated to 10 V; the ICL7660S and ICL7660A extend to 12 V and need no external diode across their range. Then check the source: generic ICL7660s are widely copied. We quote ICL7660S/A or MAX1044 from a stated channel and photograph the markings on arrival.

"The ADP3170 controller is obsolete"

The ADP3170 is a single-phase core-voltage controller for Intel VRM 8.5 designs, with a VID input that sets the output. Any replacement has to match the VID table, the drive scheme and the feedback design, so there is rarely a drop-in part. We search for remaining stock, state its date codes, and recommend X-ray before you buy. In parallel we tell you if a board change is the realistic exit.

"The stock disappeared when we paid"

Independent stock is offered to several buyers at once. Our quote line says whether the source is confirmed or being confirmed, and how long the price holds. We confirm the quantity again before the proforma invoice, not after payment.

Where these parts go

Quality checks for power parts

Power ICs are among the most copied parts in the open market, because the popular lines are cheap to imitate and hard to test without a load.

Power management questions

Yes. Send the complete ordering code, quantity and target date. We reply within 24 hours with a quote or the questions we need answered.

No. They differ in reference voltage (1.221 V vs 0.8 V), frequency (500 vs 570 kHz), input range, pinout and thermal pad. A candidate list for either part shows these numbers side by side.

Usually, and it is often an improvement, but check the pinout, the output-capacitor requirement, dropout at your current and the package heat path. CMOS LDOs such as AP2112 are ceramic-stable but have a lower input-voltage limit (6 V).

Yes, as the exact orderable variant the manufacturer programs. We do not program PMICs. The suffix that carries the sequence and default voltages must match your design.

The original MPN with suffix, quantity, acceptable date-code range and the conditions that cannot change. We quote remaining stock and, separately, candidates with their differences.

Yes, as the qualified orderable code, usually with a -Q1 or similar suffix. The grade (for example Grade 1, −40 to 125 °C) is stated on the quote line.

Often. Cut tape or partial packs where the source allows, at a higher unit price than a full reel.

Visual inspection in-house against a documented checklist; X-ray, decapsulation or electrical tests by an independent laboratory when the order needs it, quoted before you order.

The validity is written on each line. Independent stock usually holds for a few days; distributor and factory quotes hold longer.
