Knowing where the number comes from tells you whether it can be negotiated, and how to buy less.

MOQ, MPQ and order multiple

Three numbers appear on component quotes and distributor listings. They are often confused.

Term

Meaning

Example (typical)

MOQ

Smallest quantity accepted for the line

1 reel

MPQ / SPQ

Minimum or standard package quantity: what one factory pack holds

4,000 pcs per 7″ reel of 0603 MLCCs

Order multiple

Quantity steps above the MOQ

Multiples of 4,000

For many parts MOQ and MPQ are the same: the seller will not open a factory pack. Distributors that sell cut tape set a lower MOQ, sometimes one piece, but charge a higher unit price for it.

Where component MOQs come from

Factory packaging. Reel sizes depend on the package. Small passives come in reels of thousands; large ICs come in trays of tens or hundreds.

Handling cost. Cutting tape, re-sealing moisture-sensitive parts and re-labelling cost the same for 10 pieces as for 1,000.

Factory orders. Parts ordered from the manufacturer’s backlog carry the factory MOQ, which can be several reels.

Independent stock. A stockist may hold a partial reel and set its own minimum.

How MOQ changes the price

Price breaks follow the packaging. A full reel is the cheapest per piece, cut tape costs more, and single pieces cost the most. On a BOM, a few low-value lines bought at full-reel MOQ can cost more than the parts you actually need. Compare the total line cost, not the unit price.

Example: a build needs 300 resistors. One full reel of 5,000 at a low unit price may still cost more than 300 pieces of cut tape at a higher one. The right choice depends on whether you will use the rest of the reel.

Five ways to buy below the MOQ

Ask for cut tape. State the quantity and accept cut tape where your assembler allows it.

Request samples. For prototypes, small quantities are often available from stock.

Accept a partial reel. Independent stock may hold a part-used reel at a lower minimum.

Consolidate the BOM. Sourcing all lines together spreads handling and freight cost across the kit. See BOM sourcing & kitting.

Allow an equivalent. For generic passives, an equivalent part with the same value, tolerance, voltage and package may have a lower minimum. Your engineer approves it first.

What to send so the MOQ is quoted correctly

Full manufacturer part number, including the packaging suffix

The quantity you need, and the packaging your assembly line accepts

Whether cut tape, a partial reel or an approved equivalent is acceptable

Your target date, so lead time and minimum can be compared

Each line on our quote states the quantity, the packaging and any minimum that applies to it, so you can see which lines are limited by MOQ before you approve.

질문

<details open>

Is MOQ the same as MPQ?

Not always.
