What information is most useful if I do not have the exact driver IC part number?

Are motor drivers and gate drivers the same product category?
No. A motor driver usually controls a motor load through a defined drive architecture, while a gate driver controls the gate of a switching device in a power stage. Some systems use both, but their selection questions and operating conditions are different.
Can a similar driver IC be treated as a direct replacement?
